Mind over Matter

Nancy Vo Journalism Professor Tovares Mind over Matter: Finding Inspiration in the Everyday By: Nancy Vo You could speak a sentence about someone who makes others feel miserable, you could write a book about someone who makes you smile or you could speak volumes for Elder Joseph, a talented, creative and very cool musician. Elder Joseph is an aspiring rapper from Silver Spring Maryland. A very well rounded individual who just doesn’t know how to frown, always laughing and seem to have an excitement and appreciation for nearly everyone and everything around him. I got the chance to interview him and he let me into his own world. Throughout his mixtape he draws the listener into the world of his story. While, most mixtapes would be quite dull to listen to he actually created a mixtape about his life and things people can relate too. Elder had this dream to make something out of himself with his music and his music is a true voice of positivity for the younger generation. He applies all the same time and effort in every song he makes. He raps about the life he is leading and the life he had to deal with before. Elder’s music is original, creative and unique all in one. His following sponsor De’Andre Maurice comments on Elder music say’s “Elder music is very conscious he actually talks about things that matter”. I believe it was one summer day that my boyfriend Wally showed me a song called Starry Eyed that Elder rapped to and when I heard him the first time I felt like he did a phenomenal job. Lyrically he sounds great. Elder does all of his writing on his own with no ones help and his producer Laz makes his beats. Elder Joseph music comes with a more personal perspective. He is a normal human being just trying to express his feelings through music rapping about everyday things. Elder takes you through a journey of his life and opens another chapter of his coming of age as he tells his story of an evolving man balancing the challenges of day-to-day life and his past experiences. His major single “Cash in my thoughts” undeniably catchy and has a great beat to it and interesting sound. He talks about the struggle and how money is on his mind and he wants to see his music take him very far. It is very upbeat and hard not to get in the groove when you hear it. The track “New Chapter” will surely be a favorite as it plays slowly and sweetly with lyrics that are just as mesmerizing as the melody. “I’m trying to make a million for my mom, cause she never seen that shit, I just hope I can do it before I have to say rest in piece and shit yeah I know my lyrics tend to get deep and shit” Elder Joseph. By the fourth track Dead President Elder wanted to let his listeners know about the things that runs through his mind in a deeper level. For instance he says “Look I never feared no man cause a man is just one man but no man understands the pain in the palm of my hands so I give it to my fans raw kinda like that bad broad that you knocked up”. It’s very rare when you encounter someone like Elder, his fans can learn about themselves and life in general just by listening to his music. When I interviewed him I absorb all he had to say. Elder is a very positive individual, seems like its positivity over everything and I asked him how does he do it and he says “I try to stay level headed, its very easy to be negative and let someone destroy it but you have to stay positive. Positivity outshines the negativity”. From time to time I believe people need someone to refresh himself or herself. Often times I get motivated but not so often inspired and for me Elder music is the ultimate inspiration. Elder music isn’t based on what everyone else wants or by what others think is good for his music. His music is 100% self made all on his own. It just goes to show that life can be so limitless and authentic. Elder’s grace and style shows that a person doesn’t have to conform to what society wants. Elder music is his own work and own development and own talent. It is completely inspiring and a blessing when you see so much creativity and talent from another person that simply showcases what they love to do. Elder said his peace and happiness is creating music, “my peace is music in a general and my happiest state is making music”, says Elder. For his next work you can be sure to expect nothing but the best work from him says Elder “my next work will be more versatile”. I definitely came out having a lot more appreciation for Mind over Matter after this story. Elder is a young creator that music needs. The mix tape ends where it begins with a reference that creativity is the key to everything.

The Snow

It's been snowing like crazy in MD but it's been enjoyable for the most part (minus driving in it) i've been able to spend a lot of time getting things in order, lately and the snow helps me clear my mind. The start of 2010 has been an experience from school to my own personal life, but all positive at the end, even though it's snowing, I know the sun is out somewhere and that's kinda how my life has always been and I never doubt the power of God. Today is just another day to appreciate the wonder of the world! I will be enjoying my latest book and drinking some gatorade!

Hip Hop

the number one reason i quit listening to the radio, i find it that the most ridiculous of people can get signed and say the most ignorant of things or create the stupidest of dances, "popular" music is at the worst state i've ever witnessed in my life.. how do you love ignorant music?
